The teaching by Confucius I find valuable is this: "Have no friends not equal to yourself," (Analects, Chapter 8). I interpret from this teaching that it is a reminder to the readers. It is reminding them of the most important rule of Confucianism, or, "The Golden Rule". This states that you should treat others the way you would like to be treated yourself. So when he says to see your friends as all equals to you, he means to treat them as you would like to be treated, as equals to all of them. This teaching relates to America because in a way it is our golden rule as well. You are told to do this countless times when learning your manners at a young age, and if you are older, you can see how it has been applied to society through political correctness and so forth.
One of Confucius's teachings I find valuable is "A gentleman covets the reputation of being slow in word but prompt in deed." This teaching refers to the common saying "think before you speak." It is important to follow this because people should use it every day in American society. When people say what they are thinking too quickly, they might end up causing conflict. Instead, they should stop, think about what they were about to say, and decide if there would be any consequences. This way, they are being careful and thinking through everything they want to say to make sure it is a proper statement.
One of the teachings of Confucius from the Analects that I find valuable is, “In the presence of a good man, think all the time how you may learn to equal him. In the presence of a bad man, turn your gaze within”. This ultimately means that the people you are associated with have a major role in your life. So if you’re around good people you should aim to be like them and learn from them. However, if you’re around bad influences you shouldn’t make yourself adaptable to their ways. This relates to American society a lot, especially teenagers and young adults. In high school teenagers can easily fall into a bad group which can change the way they live and their beliefs. Or they can choose to surround themselves with good influences that strive to be the best they possible can, the choice is yours.
I think a very important teaching of Confucius is "Do not be too ready to speak of it, lest the doing of it should prove to be beyond your powers". This means that you should not say you are going to do something if you cannot actually accomplish it. It is better to just say nothing at all, than to make a fool out of yourself. This teaching is very similar to the saying think before you speak. That is something that Americans try to use everyday. People often lack this teaching and say they are able to do something that they know is impossible. It is very important that people always keep this in mind and don't allow themselves to get stuck in a situation where they can't do what they had promised. They should have thought before they spoke.
A teaching by Confucius that I find valuable is “Reviewing what you have learned and learning anew, you are fit to be a teacher.” It means that in order to help others, you must help yourself. Once you realize the mistakes you made and what you did wrong, you can then help others with their mistakes and problems. You must take care of yourself before you take care of others. If our society today were to do this, we would be a more peaceful country. We would make sure we were okay and help others as well instead of being selfish.
Confucius said, "Do not do to others what you would not like yourself". This is a rule that I try to live by. It means that you must treat others the way that you want to be treated. This teaching is a rule in many other religions and philosophies, called "The Golden Rule". In my opinion, I do not think that people in American society follow this rule. I believe that people act upon others without thinking first. If people stopped to ask themselves if they would want a certain thing done to them before they did it to someone else, there would be less violence and controversy in the world, and that is why I think it is a valuable teaching to follow.
A teaching by Confucius that i find valuable is "A superior man is modest in his speech, but exceeds in his actions". This means that someone who can truly be admired has extraordinary talents and skills but doesn't brag about them. Take for example someone who is very good at sports. If they say things like "I'm on varsity, I'm getting a full scholarship to college and I didn't even have to contact them because I'm so great and I'm only a freshman", they are not being modest and they are obviously not able to be envied. If when someone compliments them on their talents and they only say thank you they are being modest. Also, if someone compliments them and they say thank you but also say something they need to work on they're still being modest, and obviously striving to go farther.
The teaching that Confucius said that I really like is, "In education there should be no class distinction." This quote means that education should be a non-profit thing. Learning should come to everyone equally. This quote relates to American Society because today we have public schools, and private schools. Children in private schools have more knowledge because of their financial class. Learning should come to everyone in the same amounts and not be determined by your income.
My favorite teaching of Confucius is, "A man who has committed a mistake and doesn't correct it, is committing another mistake." This quote means by not learning from your faults you are only making another fault. If you do not learn from your mistake you will only do it again and the cycle will continue to go on. Nothing will ever get fixed or accomplished therefore, you need to recognize what you have done and correct it. Without any correction you will be stuck in the same rutt with nowhere to go.
An important Confucian teaching is: "In the presence of a good man, think all the time how you may learn to equal him. In the presence of a bad man, turn your gaze within!" It means that you should aspire to be like a good man and stay away from bad men. In American society, there are many tracks you can decide to take in your life. If you hang around good people, you have a better chance of becoming a good person, too. Those who choose to be in the bad crowds, such as gangs or the people who do drugs, will most likely end up doing the same things as their friends. In America, we have the freedom to choose who we spend time with, but not everyone chooses the right people just as Confucius warned against.
One of Confucius's teaching that i find valuable is, "Do not do to others what you would not like yourself." I feel as though this moral was engraved into my brain when I was in elementary school. This moral means to treat others the way you want to be treated. This moral relates to American societies in many ways today. There are a lot of corruptions in today's society because people do not treat others with respect so in return others do not treat them with respect. As adults you learn quickly to respect people while as little children you do not fully grasp that concept because you tend to be self centered and not think of others.
A valuable teaching of Confucius is, "Do not do to others what you would not like yourself." This is the "golden rule", found in many cultures around the world. It means, before committing an act meant to hurt someone, think about how you would feel if the hurtful act was done to you. In our society, this is taught to children. It teaches that everybody has emotions, and if you are hurt by something, others will likely be hurt by it, too. Even adult Americans sometimes forget this, assuming that what they do doesn't really affect anyone. Confucius taught that we must always keep others' feelings in mind before we do something.
